Description:
A single-family house located in Tepoztlán, Mexico, just two hours south of Mexico City, this project sits within a landscape defined by its long summer season and lush, evergreen vegetation. Conceived as a weekend retreat, the house must also function as a short-term rental, requiring a spatial balance between specificity and neutrality. The house is welcoming to any visitor while still reflecting the character and preferences of the family who owns it.
The site is surrounded by mature vegetation and hosts a significant Rain Tree, an endemic species that the client requested to preserve. This condition generates a challenging spatial arrangement, guiding the placement of the built volumes to protect the tree, open the project toward the northern views, and maximize the contiguous outdoor space dedicated to the garden and pool.
The house is organized into two primary volumes: one containing the shared and service areas, and the other dedicated exclusively to the private bedrooms. The material palette responds to local availability in both labor and construction resources. Exterior surfaces combine recinto stone with exposed, pigmented concrete, while the structural system adopts reinforced concrete and clay brick, techniques well aligned with local expertise. Inside, the architecture embraces warmth and neutrality through natural plywood, exposed timber elements, and textiles fabricated by local artisans.
